Problems with newest version

Postby MousePad » April 21st, 2012, 3:55 am

Windows 7 computer. Latest version of VLC Media Player installed. Latest version of VLC Remote on my iPhone. Router is a Linksys E3000.

I sat down tonight to use VLC remote for the first time since the latest version was released. It wouldn't connect. On the local computer, I can browse to localhost:8080 and the VLC interface shows up in the web browser. When I try to browse to the machine from another device (PC, iPad, whatever), I get this:

403 Forbidden (/)
-------------------------
VideoLAN [link to website]

I've disabled the Windows firewall to no avail (there's no other firewall installed). I've searched the router config and can't find anything that would be preventing the traffic. The fact that the 403 page has a link to VideoLAN makes me think that VLC itself is preventing the connection.

This worked with the previous version of VLC and VLC Remote. Can anybody suggest what else I might try?

Thanks.

sounds like you are running the 2.1 build of vlc.

that has issues in the http interface.

the release version should work fine.

I have 2.0.1 of VLC. Should I try 2.0.0?

you sure that is 2.0.1 not 2.1.0?

suggest completely uninstalling and re-downloading from videolan.org

Had the same issue with newest update. I updated both VLC Setup Helper and VLC player.

What worked for me is a solution for MAC, which is resetting VLC Player settings (Tools>Preferences>Reset Preferences). It's a bug, I gather?

Hope that helps. I like the new interface, by the way.

didn't realise you could get that on 2.0.1 - interesting that the preference reset fixed it. Thanks for letting us know.

glad you like the new interface - please leave a review in in the appstore!

I'm just getting back to this after a while. I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling, downgrading to 2.0.0, installing 64-bit as well as 32-bit, and resetting preferences. I'm currently back at 2.0.1 32-bit. I reset the preferences and turned the HTTP interface back on. And I'm right back where I started. I can get to the remote interface on the local machine at http://localhost:8080, but can't access it from any other device. I still get

403 Forbidden (/)
-------------------------
VideoLAN [link to website]

I don't know how relevant it is, but the VLC Setup Helper does, and has always, not displayed a proper GUI. It runs in the taskbar and I have to use task manager to end the task. In previous versions, it was doing what it needed to do. Maybe now it's not?

handful of things here:

the 403 error means that you need to update the .hosts file
see the manual setup instructions for how to do that

I havent heard other problems of the setup helper gui, so interested to hear more. What do you mean about it 'running in the taskbar' ?

All right, the .hosts file solved the problem. Thanks!

As for the setup helper, it shows up in the taskbar, but Task Manager says it's not responding. I have to end task to kill it.
